What do the first pages of a romantasy novel consist of?

The opening pages of a romantasy novel must do more than simply set the scene—they need to cast a spell. Right from the start, readers should feel a tug of enchantment, a sense that they’re stepping into a world where magic simmers beneath every glance and destiny lingers in the shadows. A compelling romantasy opening blends the allure of romance with the awe of fantasy, so the world-building must be immersive yet effortless. But more importantly, the emotional stakes need to be felt early—introduce your protagonist not just by what they see or do, but by what they long for. That yearning will anchor the romantic tension and fuel the fantasy's wonder.

Even if the love interest doesn’t appear right away, a whisper of connection, prophecy, or tension can weave into the narrative early on. Readers should sense that hearts will clash and fates will entwine, even if the path is unclear. Drop hints of larger conflicts and hidden truths, but don’t overwhelm with exposition. The first pages are critical—make them unforgettable.

Romantasy is a mashup of romance and fantasy. Some say it’s a new subgenre. Others that’s it’s an old one renamed. Either way, romantasy is a dream come true for readers who love both fantasy and romance.

That’s me! If it’s you, and you want to enter the IFW Romantasy Novel First Pages contest, here’s what I’ll be looking for as your judge:

• An equal balance of romance and fantasy elements.
• A strong, likeable heroine because the main character in romantasy is usually female. A tough cookie, but fun at parties if you like a girl who dances with a dagger in her boot.
• A hero who always looks for the girl with a dagger in a boot. An equal match for the heroine in all things, though it’s okay if they have an edge in a sword fight.
• Show me the world you’ve created for your couple. Does magic rule or is it forbidden? Is there a dark power threatening their world? The fun part of fantasy is imagining a world where anything is possible.

Presently, romantasy novels are hotter than a sword fresh off the forge. Current titles: Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros and A Court of Thrones and Roses series by Sarah J. Maas. An oldie but goodie is Restoree by Anne McCaffrey.
